Annual Advanced Student Exhibition
"The Danish concept of Hygge refers to finding comfort, pleasure and warmth in simple, soothing things such as a cozy atmosphere or the feeling of friendship. The Scandinavian term encompasses a feeling of coziness, contentment and well-being found through cherishing the little things. This year the BAYarts advanced pottery students explore this theme in their annual show."
Artist Statement for This Series
What came first, the poet or the potter? To write, to draw, to mold mud into a shape is inherent to our primordial humanness. My work celebrates this innate need and knowing we carry within ourselves, which long predates me and will surely surpass me. I find joy and serenity in these moments of exploration and play, and rejoice in this small blip of time where I may join in this fine, sustained dialogue with our ancestors and descendants. My work combines simple ceramic forms with unobtrusive glaze designs. Pieces serve as vessels for my homemade dip-pen inks, useful for writing and drawing. (FYI, the potter came first by a mere few thousand years.)
