The following was an opportunity in thinking visually by redesigning a shelf talker for use in a large brick-and-mortar. Sales teams use simple tools, such as shelf talkers, for product engagement. This particular item was designed for use in a chain bookstore (260 operating stores, ranging from 4,000 to 30,000 sq. ft.) stocking a range of book titles for adults and kids, as well as toys and games. This is the final design concept for an advertising shelf talker for "Dolly Parton: Behind the Seams My Life in Rhinestones".
The final concept was developed from observational research within the store. The observations and resulting data looked at existing shelf talkers, aisles, products and user engagement. Lack of engagement and ineffective design were vital in the research phase.
The text which inspired the resulting shelf talker advertisement, “Dolly Parton: Behind the Seams My Life in Rhinestones”, was filled with fun colors, illustrations, types and proverbial 'rhinestones'. The book itself wasn’t given much of a star-studded treatment at the store, where it was shoved beneath a table in an unexciting stack. I looked forward to the opportunity to give this funky work the star-treatment it so deserved.
